Lifestyle Pets is selling Savannah cats that they call "Ashera" cats for three times the cost of a registered, pedigreed, show-quality Savannah cat. Even at the outrageous price of over $20,000, the Ashera buyer is getting a non-registered, non-pedigreed pet that cannot be bred or shown. Savannah cats, on the other hand, are registered with TICA (The International Cat Association) and are bred according to a defined standard. Every registered Savannah cat holds its value, much like a thoroughbred horse or AKC registered dog. Savannah cats get Asian Leopard cat in their bloodline when the domestic outcross for the African Serval, or any Savannah ancestor, is a Bengal cat. This particular outcross creates what Lifestyle Pets calls its Ashera cat. The predominant advantage of this outcross is to get a cat that has rosettes ("leopard spots") and stripes, instead of one that has solid dark spots and stripes on a light background like an African Serval. The primary disadvantage of this particular outcross is that the Savannah breed standard calls for solid spots as a preference over rosettes as they more closely resemble the African Serval ancestor on which the Savannah breed is based. The Savannah breed standard was developed to discourage the Bengal (hence Asian Leopard cat) bloodline because African Servals are very human-attached for wild animals, but Asian Leopard cats are not. It is feared that inclusion of too much Asian Leopard cat in a Savannah will cause the cat to be less domestic, and more wild, in its behaviors and attachment to its humans. This is obviously not always the case as each cat develops its own personality, but is probably a general truth. Large size, exotic markings, regal presence ... whatever your attraction to the Ashera cat, you will find it satisfied at less than a third of the cost with a Savannah cat ... and to boot you'll have a pedigreed pet that is registered with TICA. There is no substitute for a Savannah. They are a unique breed that makes an amazing pet!
